Epic Adventure -- Day 15 -- 13/09/2012 -- Ceres, Olive Rock

We woke up this morning feeling quite hung over! Last night with Phillip was amazing fun, but ouch! :) Dan got up and started what turned out to be the worst fire ever, as he just shoved some twigs on top of all the logs and lit them..... Needless to say once they had burnt through and not lit anything else, the fire went out :) we both had some of the Debonairs pizza for breakfast and laid down for another hour or so before I had another go at lighting the fire. This time it actually lit and we enjoyed some time around the nice warm fire before gathering ourselves and heading to Ceres to meet with the florist to view his portfolio.

Before we left the cabin we checked all the coolant and fluid levels like Doug told us to each morning and found that the radiator coolant was quite depleted. We topped it up with 2 litres do water and drove the 10 km to Ceres before checking the level again upon arriving. In 10km we lost all of the 2 litres we put in the car and so we topped it back up and phoned Doug. Dug was busy under a car so we left him a message and did the only thing we could do for the rest of the day -- keep filling the coolant every time we stopped.

Jenny took care of the driving this morning because I was, to put it lightly, still drunk from our most enjoyable dinner. I have to say the last thing I wanted to do in the state I was in was to look at flowers and pretend to be interested in the choice of arrangements but I had no choice in the matter. Jenny explained the type of flowers, quantity and arrangement to Mike and we agreed on a price range before departing for the Ceres museum.

The museum was interesting, called the Ceres Transport Museum, it detailed the history surrounding the founding of the area and the means by which settlers got themselves through the mountains and up one of the many passes into the Ceres valley. It did seem a bit forced though to have such a museum in the middle of a very small town. Entry was only R5 a person so we paid our entry and had a very hungover wander about the place. There was also a table set up at the side of one room where for R2 a person you could taste some of the newest flavours of Ceres juice. We got to try cloudy apple and pear, which we ended up buying, midnight fruits and one other. As usual, they were all lovely! I had hoped that by juice tasting they would have had all of the Ceres juices there to taste, but never mind.

After we had a good look at the many wagons and artefacts we departed and set off down the road to find some Internet (at this point we were quite far behind on keeping up with the blogs). We managed to find a small shop that did accessory hire for functions as well as tea, coffee and scones that had wireless Internet for us to use! Jenny sat and typed away while I ran off to Whimpy for a barbecue burger lunch to help with my hangover. When Jenny was done with her updating of the blog and general networking we decided that it was time to head home and have a nap to help us recover. We stopped along to side of the road on our way back to Olive Rock and enjoyed some ham and cheese sandwiches overlooking the winding road and disused train tracks headed down the mountain.

We returned home and had a very nice rest before loading the car up with champagne to leave with Nick and Simone. They had very graciously agreed to let us leave all the booze with them so we did not need to cart it all over South Africa for the next month. We swung by their house but found nobody home, so in the meantime we drove to Arum Lilly cottages to meet with Mandy about the guests accommodation for the week of the wedding.

Spot Dan...!
Mandy was such a joy to meet, and reinforces my belief that simply every person in this area is wonderful! She showed us the cottage and the three cabins, they are all gorgeous, luxurious and the perfect place to stay for a wedding! Each place is designed and decorated a little differently, but with the same touch of elegance. I cannot wait to stay there! Whilst we were there we met Mandy's husband, who had a look at our coolant leek issue and strongly advised us to get it checked out the next morning with his friend Jeremy. We drove into Wolseley to grab some steaks and salad for dinner and more wood for the fire, and phoned Doug about the coolant issue too, who also advised to see the mechanic in the morning. Leaking coolant can cause major problems for a car apparently!! Then we headed home for a much needed easy-going evening by the fire.

  1. The "spot Dan" photo is exquisite. It looks like a painting of Tolkein's Middle Earth!
